For our final blog of the year, we asked our team what they believe 2020 holds for our industry.
By ‘our industry’ – we mean organization’s that are considering using specific methodology to adopt New Ways of Working in order to create transformational effective change.
We also asked our team to suggest where ADAPTOVATE could help with your organisation in 2020.
So if you are planning on organizational change in 2020, read on. Even if you aren’t, but wonder if you should be, read on. Perhaps you are part of a team, that is in the midst of change, read on.
Shifting mindsets of teams and their management can be hard. With rapid disruption coming at every turn, 2020 is the beginning of decade where companies will not only need to continue to pivot quickly, but change the way they are working from the top down.
It’s that organizational change at pace and scale – that is driving momentum. It’s becoming more apparent that for effective fast change, organizations will need to encourage cross-functional collaboration, and flatten structures across functions.
So with all that in mind – here is what some of the ADAPTOVATE team believe 2020 holds:

That’s what Caitilin Studdert, a Principal in our Sydney ADAPTOVATE office says about the coming year.
“Leaders are consistently asking us ‘how should we create momentum and sustain it?’ to get the best team performance and deliver something our customers value.”
Momentum is key to creating new ways of working, and changing the mindset of individuals and teams. Agile, done the right way, helps keep the momentum going.

Benny Ko, a recent arrival at ADAPTOVATE in Melbourne says “With continuous change in the market ADAPTOVATE can help companies to change their mindset. In 2020, we want our clients to avoid being the next Blockbuster, rather, become the next NetFlix.” And it’s even possible in the media industry in 2020 that unless NetFlix learn to adapt quickly, we could be saying in 2021 “avoid being the next NetFlix, rather become the next Disney+”. You get the point.
ACHIEVE A HIGHER PURPOSE
“I think we will see organisations move away from very public large-scale transformations that they call “Agile Transformations”.” Says Mark Barber, our project lead in Melbourne.
He continues “Late adopters of business agility are beginning to understand that Agile is not an end state and that it is about transforming ways of working to achieve a higher purpose.”
“Be it customer focus, increased revenue or higher efficiency, we must adopt Agile ways of working to serve these outcomes, not just for the sake of being Agile.”

Andy Koh from our Singapore office has listed three things to watch out for in 2020.
ADAPTABILITY IN A VUCA WORLD
Andy says “The need for adaptability is becoming more apparent with the many events happening in 2019. The global trade war between US and China, months of unrest in Hong Kong, rare materials trade spat between Japan and South Korea, not to mention continuing conflicts in the middle-east.
All these show that the world continues to be volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA).
Andy continues “It would be difficult to predict what other events could happen in 2020. Being ready to respond to changing market conditions will help companies achieve stability, growth and success.”
He believes ADAPTOVATE is in a good position to help our clients achieve business agility.

AGILE GOES MAINSTREAM BEYOND FUNCTIONS OR DIGITAL
Agile started in the technology space but is starting to come into its own in Asia. With continuous success stories like AirBNB, Uber, Spotify and Google, many other global companies have come aboard the digital wave over the last few years.
Andy says “There have also been successful cases of Agile ways of working spreading into functions like marketing and risk (see our 2019 year in review). In 2020, we could see further build-up of Agile ways of working beyond just functions into different industries.
Besides the adoption of Agile within Financial Services, other industries like Healthcare, Clean Energy, Oil and Gas and even the Automobile industry (just to name a few) have started exploring the benefits that Agile can bring and will continue to do so.
ADAPTOVATE can help leaders understand what Agile means and not just view the term as another framework or process to implement. We also have the capability to show leaders how principles advocated in Agile translate to real situations at work in a practical way.
CROSS-BORDER TEAMING OVERCOME BOUNDARIES
Complexity of work is often amplified by teams split by geographic locations.
The reasons for such an arrangement are many, such as tax, cost considerations and availability of talent. Andy says, “Sometimes it is just a matter of where the company headquarters is located. With the advance in technology, various solutions have been created to bridge the gap in time zones and communication.”
Online collaboration tools like MIRO, JIRA and TRELLO are just a few common online tools utilised when using the Agile ways of working.

Significant growth in flexible working practices
Slawek Koziol is a senior consultant in our European division.
Slawek believes that as the global economy is slowing, more and more organizations turn to new ways of working. In the hope of developing the capabilities to deal with the difficult times that loom large on the horizon.
He says “Agile remains one of the best ways to develop organizational strength and resilience that will allow to adapt to the changing environment. I strongly believe that 2020 will be the year of looking into Agile Ways of Working. As a means to reduce project costs and boost productivity while at the same time creating a meaningful work environment to retain top talent.
He continues “I expect 2020 to bring significant growth in flexible working practices. More and more people will adopt flexible schedules differing from the traditional corporate daily start and stop times.
“Remote work will be more prevalent as companies will source the best talent globally. Organizations that do not embrace these changes will lose the competition for best talent. Some will allow for flexible work arrangements and remote work but only in highly autonomous roles.” Slawek says. “This approach will effectively limit collaboration and forego the benefits of high-performing teams.”
The winning organizations will make sure people collaborate effectively as a distributed team. With proper team design, team norms, optimized ceremonies and technology used as a way to encourage and support human interaction instead of replacing it.
High-performing agile organizations can do that and ADAPTOVATE have a proven track record of making it work. Organizations already experimenting with pockets of Agile will look into scaling-up of agile practices.
The challenge will be to ensure high-level competency and consistency of Agile practices across the organization. Developing a skilled cadre of Internal Agile Coaches will be critical.
